Co. Derry

Co. Derry:

The Kellys of Derry were Lords of Cineal Eachdhaca an Chodaigh. This family was descended from Eochaidh son of Eoghan son of Niall of the nine hostages. Their territory was situated in southeast Co. Derry in the barony of Loughinsholin in east Co. Derry near the present town of Clady. This group of Kellys suffered great losses in the many wars in Ulster in the middle ages and later in the Plantation of Ulster. Despite this, the family has survived in fairly large numbers around Draperstown. From this root arose people like Seamus O'Ceallaigh, the great Irish Scholar, and Sir Gerard Kelly, British Ambassador to Moscow, and Peter Paul Kelly, the great genre poet of the early part of this century.
