INTRODUCTION

The ‘Aughrim Remembered’ annual event is entering its 6th year, and the committee will present two parallel events on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July to mark the 325th anniversary of the Battle of Aughrim. The committee wishes to advise friends of Aughrim Remembered and others well in advance of this exciting weekend event. So keep those dates free.

MISSION

Overall Concept

Location: Aughrim village, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

Venues:   Aughrim Interpretative centre. The Peoples Park, Clarke’s field, St Catherine’s Hall.

Date: 16th and 17th July 2016

Activities:

 Aughrim Interpretative centre:

WAR GAME. This will involve a large scale terrain model and role playing of armchair and budding commanders in ‘fighting’ the battle again. The emphasis will be on explaining what is going on to the audience and inviting them to take turns. Warren Rainey, an accomplished model producer and acknowledged war game expert, will be running the war game component.

The Peoples Park

17th Century camp / bivouac and a display of weapons, formations and manoeuvres by re-enactment specialists who will be on hand to display their skills and preform a number of drill movements for the public.

Clarke’s field.

Just outside the village and opposite the old O’Kelly castle. This large field is an excellent location for the mounted cavalry display as part of the reenactment program.

St Catherine’s Hall

A lecture on Gordon O’ Neill’s regiment who almost drove the Williamite forces off the battlefield. This talk will be given by Dr. Padraig Lenihan, for the O’Neill Society & Donegal History Society Coach tours.

The displays are planned over two days with the cavalry element rehearing on Saturday 16th and then 3 displays on Sunday 17th.
