Hi i'm Dallas Kelly. I am trying to figure out were my Kelly Roots originated. I have got back to my 3rd great grandfather James Kelly b.1801 in Ireland emigrated to Canada I believe sometime in 1830 or 1840. With so many of our male relatives having the same names it's been a challenging road and now even more since my grandparents are gone with information they may have had. If anyone might have a clue as to what part of Ireland to start looking it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dallas.
I would suggest a DNA test from a male Kelly relation. It's the only way forward when vital records are missing. I spent 15 years up and down cul de sacs, climbing high walls, crossing deep ditches etc, and it was not till I did a DNA test that I was able to get on to the right track.
There were about 7 Kelly clans in Ireland and DNA will tell you which particular Ó Kelly sept you are from, then you can focus and hopefully get on the trail.
Best of luck,
Joe Kelly

Thank you Joe. I'll have to get my dad to do it since he's the last male. How long does it usually take to get results?

It's a process over 4 or 5 tests. Normally the first result is through in a matter of a few weeks, and from there you can decide if you want to go further.
Family Tree DNA have a Kelly project and thats the one we coordinate with. Have a look at their site and then decide.
Through the DNA I have been able to make contact with long lost cousins in the States and Australia.
Let me know how you get on,
Joe
