I am research a book about Lt. Col. Edward Kelly 1771-1828 (Ned) who was one of the Waterloo heroes. His grandfather, Thomas Kelly (1696-1786)was Sovereign of Kildare. He had enough money to buy several houses, one of them included a largish estate. I am unable to find anything about his origins or about his wife although Veaal, Vidolle, or Barr may have been her surname.

I have also been trying to find out who his son Edward(1742-1816) who was a Captain in the Dragoons was married to.

There is great deal of information about Waterloo but very little about (Ned) younger years.

If anyone can help me I would very grateful. Mariana

According to my own research Thomas Kelly (1796-1786) owned the Kildare Arms and is buried outside the cathedral. He had at least four sons, Thomas, Edward (your Ned); Waldron and Robert. The latter probably is the Robert Kelly sr. who was stationed in Madras and was killed there in a duel (The duel was hushed up by his relatives and the story spread that he had died heroically in battle in 1790. These Kellys are of great interest to me as Robert was the father-in-law to Gothic novelíst Isabella Kelly (Born Fordyce) who married Robert Hawke Kelly (one of Ned's cousins) in 1789.

Attached the Kelly arms and their Motto turris Fortis mihi deus (God is the tower of my strength)

And Barr is a good guess for the maiden name of Thomas Kelly's wife as one of his sons, Robert, declared in his will (1790) that he was the uncle of the late John Barr of Monaghan who had bequeathed to him land and property.
