TOPIC: Looking for O'Kellys

Looking for O'Kellys 12 years, 11 months ago #7

Hi Clan Kelly.

I am proud to be a descendant of an O'Kelly. My grandmother was Magdelan Rose O'Kelly (and had a hugely interesting history on her own!).

I am in the process of putting together my family tree, with a particular focus on the O'Kellys. Unfortunately, I have hit a bit of a brick wall (and I have really not gone that far back). If anyone in the clan can help with information, I would be deeply grateful and, who knows, maybe there are some connections to be made out there.

My great grandfather was Daniel Joseph O'Kelly, born in Gillingham, Kent, in August 1872. He married Cornelia Martha Rose Wapenaar in South Africa. So far, I have been able to find out that he had a sister who died a spinster in England with the initials AG and a bother, Jack, who had two children in South Africa (a monsignor and a Carmelite nun). DJ's father was Thomas Kelly (possibly born O'Kelly, but removed the 'O' because of the Catholic connection). He was a school teacher in County Cavan, and married Jane Jameson. He moved the family to Kent before DJ was born.

I am based in South Africa and the conversion rate on the Euro makes it a bit expensive for me to subscribe to many of the geneology research sites out there. If I could make a connection through the clan, that would be great.

Please do not hesitate to contact me via the forum or on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in connection with this. I am keen to hear from you all.

Hi Claire, welcome to the Kelly website. Nice to see that you are interested in your family genealogy. Do you have a male descendant of DJ who would be prepared to do a Kelly Family DNA test? Best wishes. Joe A Kelly.

Thanks Joe - wonderful to be connected!

I have one male O'Kelly relative that I know of. Will have to ask him if he wouldn't mind. I hope he doesn't consider it invasive in any way. I am going to mail him and ask him, and I will keep you posted.

Hi Claire, this is the other Joe (Cav) here. DNA is the only way to go, it cuts to the chase and gives very accurate linkage to family group and location.
Great to hear from you and keep in touch.

Claire I have your email ref Daniel Joseph. If you can put it into another format we can put it on the wed. Or if you wish post it onto this topic. It makes very interesting reading.

Rick Ó Kelly of the States has the following question.

Would you know any who might know the history of the Mac Gilkelly who lived in Kilkelly east of West Port in Co Mayo?
